Challenge
USAF depots face vast backlogs of legacy aircraft parts with obsolete tooling. Procurement lead times of 1–3 years for some parts create readiness gaps.
Solution
Hill Air Force Base deployed a multi-technology AM programme producing certified metallic and polymer spare parts for aircraft on time-critical schedules. Part of DoD AM Strategy implementation. DoD direct AM spending grew from $300M (2023) to $800M (2024).
Outcomes
- 01DoD AM spend $300M→$800M 2023–2024; USAF depot model for distributed AM
Technologies
Fused Deposition Modeling
Source
DoD AM spend $800M in 2024, expected $2.6B by 2030
