Challenge
Tall wind turbines need large concrete bases. Conventional formed-concrete bases require complex formwork and are challenging to transport and erect on remote sites.
Solution
GE and partners explored 3D-printed concrete tower sections for wind turbines — printing complex curved sections on-site, reducing formwork requirements and enabling taller towers for better wind capture.
Outcomes
- 01On-site concrete AM for tower sections; reduced formwork; taller tower enablement
